Clinicopathological evaluation of 164 dental follicles and dentigerous cysts with emphasis on the presence of odontogenic epithelium in the connective tissue. The hypothesis of “focal ameloblastoma”

چکیده
OBJECTIVES Some ameloblastomas presumably originate from odontogenic epithelium within the connective tissue of dental follicles and dentigerous cysts. Therefore, it would seem reasonable to discuss as whether odontogenic epithelium proliferations, frankly displaying ameloblastomatous features ("focal ameloblastoma"), should be considered as an "early" ameloblastoma. STUDY DESIGN Histopathological reports from 164 dental follicles and dentigerous cysts from the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Oral Pathology of the VU Free University medical center in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, were reviewed. Histopathological slides from 39 cases reporting the presence of odontogenic epithelium within the connective tissue were re-evaluated in order to assess the possible presence of focal ameloblastomas. RESULTS Focal ameloblastomas were detected in one dental follicle and in two dentigerous cysts. During a follow-up period of 6, 8 and 22 years, respectively, no clinical signs of (recurrent) ameloblastoma have occurred in these patients. CONCLUSIONS Focal ameloblastoma possibly represents the early stage of ameloblastoma development.

Expression of Matrix Metalloproteinases 2 and 19 in Odontogenic Keratocysts and Dentigerous Cysts
Background and Aim: Odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) and dentigerous cyst (DC) are two common developmental cysts involving the jaws. The role of matrix metalloproteinases 2 (MMP2) and 19 (MMP19) in progression and invasion of some cysts and tumors has been documented. This study sought to assess the expression of MMP2 and MMP19 in OKCs and DCs. Materials and Methods: In this descriptive analyti...

The of aim the present study is quantitative and qualitative evaluation of silver nitrate staining in ameloblastoma and odontogenic cysts and to compare it with their clinical biologic behavior. Glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC) is an uncommon developmental cyst. It accounts for 0.012% to 1.3% of all the jaw cysts; its prevalence is 0.17%. It was described by Gardner et al. in 1988 as a distinct entity. GOC has a slight predilection for mandible and affect more commonly in the middle-aged patients. Radiographic and clinical features of this cyst are not pathognomonic or specific. Only t...

Background and Aims: radicular cyct(RC), dentigerus cyct(DC) and odontogenic keratocyct(OKC) are the most common odontogenic cycts, respectively. Awareness of the clinical and histopathological characteristics of these lesions is very important in dental treatments, that inflammatory cell infiltration can play an important role in DC and OKCthese odontogenic cysts’ clinical presentationspathoge...
متن کاملAngiogenesis: A Critical Role in Locally Aggressive Behavior of Keratocystic Odontogenic Tumor
Introduction: Odontogenic cysts are osteodestructive lesions affecting the jaws. Odontogenic keratocyst is an odontogenic cyst with highly aggressive features. Multicystic ameloblastoma is a benign epithelial odontogenic tumor with more aggressive behavior than dentigerous cyst and odontogenic keratocyst. Invasion and metastasis of tumors require increased blood vessels during tumorigenesis. Th...
